Obituary for Doris Jean Pearce

Doris Jean Pearce, 84, of Youngsville, passed away on April 4, 2017. She was born on January 13, 1933 to the late William Person Pearce, Sr. and Lena Davis Pearce. In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her “Aunt Vada” Davis.

Jean was born in and a lifelong resident of Youngsville. She graduated from Youngsville High School, then attended and graduated from Wake Forest College, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Public School Music and a minor in French. She went on to receive a Masters in Music Education from the University of Michigan. Jean taught music in the public schools of Knightdale, Rolesville, Selma, and Princeton. In addition she taught numerous private piano and voice students. While teaching in Johnston County, Jean was known for her outstanding high school choral groups and musicals. Even while teaching in Selma, Jean would return home to Youngsville on the weekends to be with family and go to church. Jean served as the minister of music for many years at Oak Grove Baptist Church, where she also taught a Girls Sunday School class. Jean helped many other area churches with their music programs. She enjoyed traveling the United States and Europe during summer breaks. In addition, she participated in mission trips to Alaska and Nevis. After retiring from her career teaching, Jean enjoyed genealogical research, and spent many hours investigating the histories of her families.

Jean is survived by her sister-cousins, Ava Lee Hudson Edwards, Mary Lillie Hudson Turner, and Barbara Walls Mills. Also surviving are, Ruthann Pearce Naufftus, Glenn Allen Evans, Matilda Collie Hatley, and many cousins. Although Jean had no children of her own, she touched the lives of many children and young people by not only teaching them music, but also life values.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 3:00pm in the Youngsville Town Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions in Jean’s memory to your favorite charity.
